How to make beeswax wraps the perfect cling film alternative

Save the planet and loads of money by making these beeswax food wraps at home and they are a great cling film alternative. Bees wax has antibacterial properties which is great when storing your food. The waxy fabric is slightly tacky which allows the wraps to cling to the bowls.

What can you do with beeswax? There are so many beeswax uses, the most popular is using it to make beeswax lip balm, ointments, candles and then also off-course these natural bees wax food wraps. You might wonder where to buy beeswax? I bought it from a local farmers market but it is also available online at Faithful to Nature.

All you need to make these beeswax wraps is

  • Any cotton fabric (it must be 100% cotton)
  • Scissors (I used a pair of zig zag Scissors this avoid hemming the fabric)
  • Natural Beeswax
  • Grater
  • Grease proof paper
  • A clothes iron

Step by Step instructions on how to make these bee Wax wraps

  1. Cut the fabric to your desire size. I love the circular ones to fit over bowls. I cut these wraps using the zig zag Scissors.
  2. Grate your bees wax into a bowl.

  4. Lay your piece of fabric onto a piece of grease proof paper. Sprinkle bees wax over the fabric liberally.

  6. Cover with another sheet of grease proof paper.
  7. Gentle iron over the grease proof paper. You will notice that the wax will begin to melt into the fabric. If there are areas that do not have wax – lift the top piece of grease proof paper and reapply some grated bees wax, add your top layer of grease proof paper and iron again.

  9. Remove both layers of grease proof paper and let the fabric cool.
  10. Place the fabric over your desired bowl and press down firmly and fold around the sides.

  12. To clean just wipe clean.

The alternative is to fold the sheets in ‘packets’ to store sandwiches in for instance.

NOTE: do not use hot water to clean (this will melt the wax) nor through in the washing machine.

    Hi Kari,

Where did you find the beeswax. I absolutely love this idea, especially at this time of year with all the family and friend functions and storing food for the different events.
