Whether you are looking to bake an ombre cake for a birthday party or just as a special occasion – an ombre cake is sure to add a special touch to your decor decor. This pink ombre cake was made for our special valentines day styled shoot entitled ‘sew in love’ a few years ago and was soooo pretty! I thought that it was a great fit to re-post this as part of our flamingo month.
What is ombre color?
Ombre is defined as “shaded or graduated in tone; said of colour”. The ombre color trend is totally hot at the moment and also trending the cake world.
We thought it perfect for a Valentines Day celebration, whilst we opted for shades of pink, you might also try the same with shades of red or purple ombre. Marinda lovingly shared her mothers’ microwave cake recipe with us. This cake could also easily be made with a cake box mix should you want. No need to go entirely homemade if you don’t have the time.
Microwave cake recipe
Ingredients
Method
Sift the self raising flour, sugar, maizena and salt together.
Mix the oil with the water and add mixture with sifted ingredients.
Mix the egg yolks with vanilla and add to the other mixture, mixing everything until smooth.
Beat the egg whites well and fold it in with mixture.
Spray a microwavable container with a non-stick spray and pour 1/5th of your mixture into the container.
Bake for 5 minutes on high in the microwave.
Add a little food coloring to cake mix and mix well.
Remove previous cake from container onto a cooling rack. Spray again with Spray and Cook.
Pour the next 1/5th part of your mixture into the container and repeat microwave baking process.
Each time add a little more food colouring to your cake mix, baking a 1/5th of you mixture, until you have five layers of cake, each layer darker than the previous. This will create the ombre color effect inside the cake.
Finish the cake off with a smooth buttercream icing.
