We are all trying to make our rands stretch a little further, but what are the ways that we can get away with styling our homes for less?
Pinterest is one of the easiest ways to find some nifty ideas on how to style your home on a budget. I thought I’d share some of my top ways to style your home for less.
1. Bargain hunt
Sites and Facebook groups that provide platforms for selling second hand items sometimes make for great finds! Most of us have grown accustom to shopping for second hand cars online but it has become a great space to search for decor and decor related items as well. Quite a few of the larger furniture items in my house are either hand-me-downs or items that I bargain hunted for. Make sure you always check the seller reviews and comments before committing to any purchases and read advice on how to meet up with people to ensure that you transact in a safe way. Local charity shops are also places where you can find gems, I just love to frequent Long Street in Albertsville and always end up buying some pretties.
2. Make guests feel welcome by using some greenery
This months’ creative challenge was all about this, adding some greenery (nominated the Pantone colour of 2017) to your decor. Plants and flowers are an inexpensive way of adding colour, depth and texture to a room, as well as a fresh, welcoming feeling for guests. You could either tie in the colour of the flowers with the accent colour in a room, or turn the plants into a feature.
3. Create an accent wall
Who said walls had to be dull? reach out for a paintbrush or try your hand at wallpaper. Creating that one focal wall with large canvasses, colour or an interesting texture is often easier than updating a whole space.
4. Don’t be afraid to DIY
Don’t be afraid of picking up the materials and creating something yourself. It can add real character and personality to a room if it’s been handmade, but you can always keep things simple to begin with, such as making vibrant cushions or cool wall art. As your confidence grows, you can branch out into up-cycling and try your hand at more complex make-overs. My aim this year was to share some more of the hand-made and DIY things that I have been doing in and around the house and you will be seeing much more of this on the blog going forward.
5. Make use of vinyl
Vinyl is such a great and inexpensive way to add an interesting pattern or quote to a space. It can be added to a wall, on glass or even doors. As long as the surface is fairly smooth and free from dust they stick easily. Vinyl can easily be removed when you decide to re-style a space but is unfortunately not re-useable.
