Couple photographers, Andre + Selma from Expressions Photography was fortunate enough to capture the scrabble themed wedding of Matthew + Amy {high school sweethearts} at the De Malle Meul in Philadelphia, Western Cape.

How did Matt propose? {As told by Amy}
Matt was planning to propose over a picnic on the beach but the weather was not playing along. So, he set up a picnic in his lounge instead, with all my favourite things (biltong, cheese and pink champagne). Out of nowhere he brought out a present for me, I opened it to find my favourite board game, Scrabble. Since we were still enjoying our picnic I put the scrabble box aside to play later… he looked rather disappointed and said we had to play a game right away.
I very unsuspectingly started opening it up and on the board he had stuck the scrabble letters to spell out “will you be my wife”
How long did the wedding planning take?
We got married 11 months after getting engaged
Was the groom involved in any of the planning?
Yes, he was particularly fussy about his suit and the music that was to be played on the day. He helped out with a lot of things, leading up to the day.
 
Were there any DIY details on the wedding?
We had plenty of DIY projects on the day that included:
- Boutonnieres: These had a little vintage feel made out of ribbon, lace and buttons. A little different to the standard flowers.
- Table décor + flowers: We had glass mason jars for all our flowers and candles which were collected over many months. We covered the jars with white lace. This looked really beautiful on the small jars which had candles in. We did all the flowers ourselves, bridesmaids, mom and bride put it all together the evening before. We went for a country look, so there was no difficult arranging. Just a LOT of white daisies.
- Bunting: The reception hall’s ceiling was filled with white lace bunting which the mother of the bride started sewing many months before the wedding.
- Cake: Made by my very talented bridesmaid (we even created a first of its kind Rocky Road icing).
- Stationery: All the stationery items (invitations, programs, name tags) we designed, printed and cut out ourselves. There’s something special about a handmade invitation. And there are so many freely available tools online to help you get the right design and fonts.
Do you have any advice for engaged couples?
Have fun! The engagement and wedding is such an exciting time. Remember to focus on what’s important to each of you and don’t get too tied up in details that don’t matter.
