My friend Heleen from Little Honeypot’s little one is always styling in the most gorgeous items. One of these items being a lovilee Bow turban. When I heard that I was expecting a girl I wanted to get my hands on one of these for the winter. Heleen introduced me to Annapatat Kids and I was so excited to see her range at the recent Rock-A-Baby fair that I attended. Even more surprised was I to find that when I placed an order for goodies on-line, the shipping was FREE! I had to contact owner Anneke to find out more…
How did you start the business?
Annapatat Kids started when I had to move to Jo’burg. Leaving everything behind and being completely out of your comfort zone, you somehow start believing if you can do something like that, maybe you can do greater things and accomplish more than you think. With my boyfriend working long hours and me being alone I wanted to put all my energy and creativity into something new. I always had a passion for kids clothes and everything quirky and bold. Annapatat started small and was part of three jobs I juggled, but soon it started to snow ball and I wanted to focus more and more on it. After a few years of working very hard we moved back to Cape Town and now I am able to work from home, with Annapatat being my main focus and the occasional inspiring freelance work for a local magazine, being a loving doggy mommy to my two bulldogs.
What items do you stock and for what ages?
We are dedicated to creating beautiful, high quality products for your little ones, ranging from sizes 3 – 6 months up to 3 – 4 years. We offer a girls and boys only range as well as some unisex options for you to choose from.
Tell us more about the creative process?
I draw my inspiration from vintage styles, my slight obsession with fabric and with finding unique ways to mix and match. The quirkier the better. I find it impossible to ‘turn it down a notch’ so I rather just go with what’s fun and different. It is so rewarding seeing beautiful pictures sent by proud mommies of their little ones. Knowing that the outfit you created was chosen for a special day warms my heart every time.
I spend a lot of time choosing the right fabric, pondering over the look for so long (sleepless nights are my most creative times!) and I work with a wonderful team of seamstresses, together I feel we do create something to be proud of. I find it hard to let go so I still make all my smalls and soft toys myself, and love doing the occasional custom order. With so many amazing brands out there the demand to be creative, refreshing and inspiring is such hard work but the outcome is always exciting.
Being a toddler; young, careless and free and being able to capture those moments with beautiful clothes, pictures proudly published on Facebook and Instagram, being a part of that memory, it’s something so rewarding and ‘forever’. I love what I do and will always strive to be different, and looking pretty of course, always look pretty.
How often do you add new items to the range?
I love changing the look and feel of my range all the time, my designs and quantities are very limited, sometimes I’m my worst enemy if something I really love sells out too fast!! But keeping things exciting and resembling the mood I’m in or the colour I’m crushing on at the moment is putting a bit of my personality into my work.
Where can lovilees purchase your items?
I mainly sell from my online shop www.shopannapatatkids.co.za where I offer free shipping! It is currently my way to say thank you to my amazing loyal customers.
I also supply a handful of local boutiques and am on the road at events like Rock-A-Baby, Kamers Stellenbosch in November and the Lilliput market.
