Bicycle themed wedding

In April this year Cobus and Marlies celebrated their beautiful wedding celebration at Arts on Main in the heart of Jozi. Having met each other through their active lifestyle of cycling, they decided on a unique bicycle themed wedding. Carolien and Ben was there to capture the perfect day filled with unique DIY details, hand picked flowers and adoration. Even more impressive was the fact that this lovilee event was planned in just 10 weeks!

Marlies had just come back from overseas and bought a mountain bike, but her Dad worried that she would ride alone, so he asked Cobus if he thought it was safe… Cobus grabbed the opportunity and took it upon himself to show her the trails around Jo’bur. Now she wouldn’t imagine riding alone!

Before Cobus finally proposed, the ring went on many kayaking trips down the Vaal river, but the right opportunity never came up. He even built candlestands for the kayaks! However, on the day, he took Marlies up to Northcliff water-tower for sundowners (this is where he had asked her out a few months before) before heading to Emmerentia dam and getting down on one knee. They celebrated afterwards at another favourit – the Leopard in Melville.

DIY Details
We did most of the décor ourselves. We bought burlap for table runners, jam jars for flowers, a wooden door for table seatings, picked cosmos on the day for church decorations and had a special stamp made to give a unique touch to our brown paper bag cutlery holders. You need family and friends that are willing to help out, especially to set up on the big day.

Any advice for engaged couples?
I think the best advice we had was to pick your favourite restaurant as your wedding venue…then you’re sure to know the atmosphere and food will be good!

Look at hobbies that you enjoy and try to incorporate them into your theme. To plan a wedding under 3 months is totally possible but you are forced to be decisive and take all the help you can get! It’s also wise to see what colours are then currently in the stores and choose a colour palette accordingly…it will save you many headaches trying to find the right ties/bridesmaid dresses.
