At the start of this year we predicted the appearance of dramatic darks at weddings. Whilst hard to imagine that pastels could be replaced by darks and even blacks, it is quite possible and even elegant. Our vision with this Radiant Orchid styled shoot was to show how it can be done and how the Pantone colour of the year 2014 – Radiant Orchid could be incorporated. The end result was a dramatic, yet elegant feel for a wedding.

Whilst it is rather challenging to have a black on black palette that looks the part for your special day due to the different hues of black that can be found from the materials and other wedding elements used, it is much easier to use black as a base colour. We opted to use black and add a brighter purple, Radiant Orchid as main colour and then compliment it with shades of purple, ranging from reds to blues in the floral arrangements.
The stationary by Colleen van Heese from Lieflingkind Design formed the base of the shoot. The colours included blacks, whites and purples with a menu option of either white on black or the purple on white with black writing. Colleen also designed the ice-cream stationary for us to use with the hand-made, designer blue-berry ice-cream by Karien van Emmenes from Whiskaway Ice-cream and Sorbet. This lady with a background as pastry chef is well-known for her designer ice-creams at weddings as she creates unique flavours that portray the couples’ preferences and personalities.
The shoot took place at the Black Olive Lounge in Quellerina, Johannesburg. Just off the 14th Avenue off-ramp on the N1 highway. The venue provided the perfect canvas for the shoot with its white walls, crystal chandeliers and 360 degree views. Owner Leandré, an event planner by occupation, was there to assist every step of the way. We worked together hand-in-hand to create this wonderful shoot and her talent and experience was clearly visible.
Most of the décor items and elements were provided by the venue, with the exception of the flowers that Samantha from Bliss Floral Creations provided. She opted to use the full purple colour spectrum and added pops of red. There were also ample textures brought in by the use of various flowers that included Orchids, roses and even sweet peas.
The setting was rounded off perfectly with a large ombre wedding cake by 180 degrees catering and confectionary. These lovilees also created the macaroons that were used as placeholder cards with little flags by Lieflingkind. Owner and creative Popi Zolas followed the brief to the T and we were really pleased with the end results. These flags displayed each guests name on the seating.
The Wedding dresses were provided by Bedfordview based bridal Couture store, Dresses Divine. There was an option of three dresses, each with its own unique details. We paired the white dress with a black infinity dress and also provided two bouquet options, one by Bliss Floral creations that was similar to the flowers used in the table décor and another, one of Paper J’s black proteas.
The make-up for the models was done by Rene du Plessis from Ophelia Paisley. She opted for a dramatic look on the eyes for the one model and then more dramatics lips on the other. She made use of the colour scheme perfectly. The shoot paired with Fashion, Lifestyle and Wedding photographer, Natalie Field’s creative skills ended in a truly lovilee result. Her knowledge in the use of Studio lighting and directing of the models made the shoot flow easily.
Tips to create this look and feel for your day:
Start off with a black base and decide on a colour that you’d like to use in conjunction with the black. Candles and bling is a must for this type of wedding, thus the use of the see-through ghost chairs as well. If you’d like to add hand-made details, decide on one or two projects that you can confidently do and consult with a wedding planner, like Leandré, that would be able to assist you to turn your dreams into a reality.
