Robert & Hanri tied the knot at Nooitgedacht Estate, Stellenbosch, in a country glam wedding captured by Debbie Lourens Photography.

Tell us more about the proposal?
The couple, who met whilst still at university had an instant engagement. Robert landed his dream job, in the UK and had to leave within three weeks of receiving his VISA. In this three weeks they had to travel to the Northern Cape in order for him to ask Hanri’s parents for her hand. No doubt it was hard for them, because he was taking her far away. ‘I have never been up Table Mountain, so a week after the road trip, on 1 May 2014, he took me up Table Mountain. Hiding the ring in his jacket, he looked around for a calm and well scenic place to ask me. As a couple walked by, Robert asked the guy to take a photo of us, me not knowing what is really happening. No pressure for this guy taking a proposal pic!! Right there, Robert went down on his one knee. What joy!!! I said yes, of course…’

How long did the wedding planning take?
I, Hanri, planned the wedding by myself, Robert was in the UK until the wedding. It took about 5 months to get everything in order. I still had a full time job, so it could have been quicker. Robert assisted via Skype as he could, saying yes or no to ideas or giving his opinion.

How did you decide on the theme and/or the colour palette?
I knew I wanted sparkle, but it had to be subtle, soft and playful. Coral always makes a great statement and it is still soft on the eye. So, we went and played around with gold, coral pink, soft greens, whites and cream. Here Bright & Beautiful Flowers and Décor helped with flower choices. The theme in my mind that would suit us and the venue we chose was “lights”. Not white light, but soft yellow, faded light. Light can set a great vibe and can be quite magical if it is done right. So that is what I aimed for. The high ceiling of the venue made this look amazing, hanging from the top.

There were plenty of DIY project that included:

• Cocktail straws – These little straws had flags sticked onto them. They had mojito’s and daiquiri’s as pre-drinks, so the red straws had a flag that said, “Daiquiri me!!” and the Mojito straws said “Mojito me!!”. Stickers were printed and straws where bought.
• The wedding invitations – Printed and designed by Oh Yay. These were strings of laser cut round shapes with wedding details on every circle. It was strung together with a grayish lint, as seen on photo. A magnet was placed on the back of the first circle, glued on, to keep the lint tight by the bridesmaids.
• The broaches for the groomsmen, bride’s brothers and the fathers of the bride and groom – They brought little wooden laser cut pieces along with blue lint and glued it together onto a broach.
• The bridesmaid’s corsages – You buy the wrist band separate and it has a silver plate on it that can fold around whatever you want to put on the plate. They brought three big white (fake) flowers and placed them on the plate and the stems were made of wires. They folded them and glue them together.
• The seating board – They brought a long blank canvas, sprayed it gold, and pasted the seating charts, as printed by Pretty in Stains, with double sided tape onto the canvas. Just for effect, they also pasted a blue lint bow on the top of the canvas.
• The guest photo frame favours – here the bridesmaids helped. The frames were brought from Mr Price Home. The photo of Rob and Hanri that was put into the heart shaped frame.
• The confetti bags – They bought ready-made plastic bags, got the designed stickers from Pretty in Stains and added two table spoons of biodegradable confetti in it. Sealed it with the sticker, neat and envelope-like.

Do you have any advice for other couples planning their wedding?
Just enjoy every moment of it. It passes so quick! It is the only time you will ever experience the time and emotions that goes along with planning your wedding. Oh yes, and keep track of all mails and To-do’s as you go along. Time management is very important. Manage that, and you will be able to keep calm.
