This eco-friendly wedding, captured by, Shantelle Visser Photography, took place alongside the pool on the lawns of Manfred’s Legacy at the magnificent Constantia Glen Wine Estate. The theme of the wedding was clearly organic and natural, with both the bride and groom being environmentally conscious and strictly vegetarian. The couple requested that there be as little wastage as possible and that they would like to take the floral arrangements and décor home to plant in the garden of their new home.
The couple met whilst backpacking in Indonesia, in 1998. More than a year they organised to see each other in Amsterdam and after three months they decided to give the relationship a shot. 14 Years and 2 kids later, this couple tied the knot! They really enjoyed having their kids be a part of both the proposal (on the mountain above Muizenberg on a stunning day in April 2012), as well as at the wedding earlier this year.
Why an eco-friendly wedding?
We feel strongly about taxing the environment as little as possible and we didn’t want our wedding to leave a trail of waste. As it was, I felt guilty about overseas guests flying in for the occasion and we almost asked for trees to be planted as a wedding gift (but in the end so as not to offend anyone or force people to do anything, we left it up to each individual to decide on a gift).
How did the day come together?
Alida, from Flowers in the Foyer, created “wild” organic trailing table centrepieces, a delicate bridal bouquet and pew detail in line with the couple’s request, using interesting foliage, succulents, herbs and beetroot bulbs. We love the fact that many plants used still had their roots in tact and were re-planted after the wedding day! The swimming pool was also adorned with floating “bird’s nests” candles while bowls of fresh cut herbs doubled up as confetti. Guests were also given gifts of herbs and succulents to plant as remembrance of the celebrations.
The dishes were all vegetarian and delicious to even the staunchest of carnivores. The wedding cake was chocolate, but sugar and wheat free (for fun, not one of the couples’ dietary requirements) and ended up being most delicious.
Do you have any advice for brides-to-be?
If you are busy with the rest of your life, the best advice we can offer is to enlist the help of a professional wedding planner! That’s been our life saver. We were very involved with how we wanted things, but they know all the right suppliers and do the leg work. This meant the whole preparation was fun and never became stressful or a nightmare, in between getting our house done and moving back in two weeks before the big day… At the wedding itself everything also came perfectly together and Madri and Niki made sure it all ran smoothly. I look back on the whole experience with great satisfaction and joy!
