Introducing Hartsgoed Dekor & Geskenke

“Hartsgoed – dit vat al die mooi en goedvoel van ‘n mooiding vas wat lekker warm in jou hart kom lê,” says owner, Alet van Zyl. We asked her to share more about her shop that stocks Home and Kids decor items as well as some kids clothing – a true gem.

Hartsgoed took its first brave steps with an exibition at the Upington Landbou expo in 2010. After I resigned from the wine industry which I truly loved, my sister invited me to do an exibit. With a bakkie load of brand new stock consisting of aprons, cushions, hearts and only two duvet covers my farmer husband and myself were on our way to Upington.

My husband gave me R10 000 to realise my dream and I bought material, weathered frames, wooden hearts and ribbon to resell. The community of Upington were so good to me – I returned home with a new sewing machine, empty bakkie and a heart overflowing with hope.

I then became a supplier to 2 shops in the Northern Cape, exibited at Aardklop and after KKNK 2011, Hartsgoed opened its doors in Swellendam on 10 June 2011. On 3 March 2012, a second Hartsgoed shop opened in Upington for which I am truly grateful.

My range consists mostly of unique baby and kids bed linen made of 100% cotton as well as complimenting decor. Close to my heart, are the Hartsgoed cushions with Afrikaans poetry – I do the printing myself. I am currently developing a range of Afrikaans poetry for walls, specifically for children’s rooms.

Hartsgoed also offers unique aprons, book covers, hearts, bunting, laundry bags and table linen. Products can be ordered from [email protected] and photos with prices are available on my Facebook page, Hartsgoed Dekor & Geskenke. My blog, hartsgoed.blogspot.com will be live soon.

Hartsgoed is proudly South African and only sells South African products that are sourced with love. Stock includes porcelain, weathered frames, words-for-the-wall, stacking boxes, lovely ribbons, Sticky Fudge kids clothing, lamp shades and a variety of gift and home decor items.

I am inspired by the beauty of our people and nature. Old-time decor has a special place in my heart and I cannot resist beautiful fabric! I greatly admire my mom that did wonders with fabric since I can remember. She taught us to be creative and to think outside the box, but to always stay true to yourself… I treasure my family and my heart will always belong to the red dunes and valleys of the Kalahari…
