Michelle van Deventer is the owner of a store that offers hand-made costume jewellery pieces. Amongst the pieces that she makes are vintage photo locket necklaces perfect for bridesmaid gifts. She is giving one lovilee the opportunity to walk away with two of these versatile lockets.
How did you start your business?
For as long as I can remember I have enjoyed making things – anything from knitting doll clothes, drawing, painting, building or just making a mess. I have always been hyper critical of my own creations though and never had the confidence to pursue a creative career when I was younger. After school I completed a B.Comm degree and embarked on a corporate career. Although I loved my job, I always yearned to do something more creative as a full time career instead of just the many hobbies with which I attempted to fill the gap.
I officially started pouring my heart into my business in April 2015 and love every moment of the creative process. The vast experience that I have gained during my corporate years also comes in handy with the business side of things!
Tell us more about the products and the lockets
All of the items are costume jewellery and not made with any precious metals. By opting for the plated metals, I can offer a variety of unique, fun jewellery pieces at affordable prices to a wider market segment. From inception, my aim was to design and make unique jewellery pieces that are whimsical, eclectic, vintage and romantic all mashed up. As the name of my business indicates, I work from my heart.
The vintage photo locket necklaces are used to store precious memories. People store photos of loved ones in them to carry with them as they go. These lockets have proved to be quite popular amongst brides that opt for vintage themed weddings. With a variety of options to choose from and the option to personalise the lockets, it makes ideal bridesmaid gifts that they can wear on the big day but also many years thereafter. A great idea is to insert a nice quote or message into the photo slots of the lockets.
An alternative is to use the lockets is as a scent locket. Some of the designs are perfect for this purpose as it has a cut out design with ventilation holes to allow the fragrance to be released. Instead of a photo, a felt disc can be inserted into the one side of the locket. Just a few drops of your favourite essential oil or perfume every few days and you always smell as fresh as a daisy! The discs can be replaced / exchanged so you can have one disc for each of your favourite fragrances.
