A must try Home Made Mustard Recipe!

Everything Home Made is just so much more special than shop bought, that is why I share this home made mustard recipe with you today. It is the perfect gift when added to a Consol preserve jar or just simply the perfect touch to a tablescape when entertaining.

Mustard is defined as… “a hot-tasting yellow or brown paste made from the crushed seeds of certain plants, typically eaten with meat or used as a cooking ingredient.”

This humble ingredient is found in all of our fridges. Some of us eat it lathered onto hot dogs, or accompanying roast beef or in our salad dressings. Mustard can come in a variety of “heat” levels – some like it to gently tickle the back of their throat and others want their mustard to blow their minds.

When making your own mustard the yellow mustard seeds are mild whereas the dark seeds are hot. I like to mix them together – I do not want to feel like I am dying of heat when I eat the mustard but I still want to taste the flavour. Making your own mustard will help you save money as well as give you the flexibility to flavour your own mustard.

Prep Time20 minsTotal Time20 mins

Ingredients

¾ cup Mustard Seeds (You can buy yours from a spice shop or Woolworths) - I split mine into a 50/50 ratio
 ½ cup Water
 ¼ cup Red Wine Vinegar
 1 tsp Turmeric
 1 tsp Salt

Method

1

Add all the ingredients in a bowl and mix well.

2

Let sit for 24 hours - the mustard seeds will absorb the liquid and become softer.

3

Put all in a blender and blend until you reach the desired consistency. You can add some more water or vinegar if the mixture is too thick.

4

Store in a glass jar in the fridge.
