Bride, Megan Farrell, sent me the submission of her leafy green Free State Wedding and it was just lovilee! The photographer on the day was Mariska Venter from Colour Photography. Their special day took place at the St. Fort Country House in Clarens, one of the most beautiful parts of our country! The couple both have an Irish heritage. Most of their decor was inspired by this, a merger between lush green hills in Ireland and rustic feel of the Free State.
The couple met through Megan’s cousin, John and a friend moved into a room of a student accommodation home, shared by Megan’s cousin. At first John misinterpreted Megan’s interest in him to be an interest in his friend, but after a group effort from their friends they eventually ended up having breakfast together. Two days later she “found out” they were dating, when she received a relationship request from him on Facebook…
John and his family moved around a lot when he was young, one of the places he spent the most time, met his life-long friends and actually enjoyed calling home was in the Free State town of Bethlehem. A few minutes’ drive from Bethlehem is the beautiful tourist town of Clarens and Golden Gate Highlands National Park. Since they started dating he had said that he wanted to take Megan to his favourite look-out point in the national park.
The opportunity finally presented itself on Christmas day in 2013 and John made good use of the opportunity to pop the big question. It was a very busy day at the park, but they managed to find a window to stand on look-out for John’s mom to take a photo of them. Megan walked over to check that the photo was zoomed to perfection and as she got into position for the photo next to him spotted something shiny in his hand around her shoulder. As she turned to look at John, he went down on one knee, and… the rest is history!
DIY details
There were plenty DIY’s that took place before the day. The bride made cupcake flags from toothpicks and washi tape, she also designed and made the save-the-dates. The save-the-dates were a pretty typed out notification stuck onto a cut-out from a sheet of pressed cork which gave it a very nice rustic feel! They also used the free printable mad libs found on lovilee {get them here} which the guests had so much fun with!
The very favourite DIY was off-course the bride’s shoes! Whilst she has never been a heels kind of girl she wanted something pretty and unique. She purchased some green pumps and attached pearl dots and lace, handed down from her great-grandmother.
In the end, every wedding will have some forgotten detail or guests who don’t turn up, or even a little rain (which is believed to be good luck by the way). As long as you are there, and the man you love and want to marry is there… and offcoure an officiant, you will end up being blissfully happy when you are officially husband and wife! Have fun, and remember to breathe… I’ve read and heard it said so many times but you cannot imagine how the day really does fly by! Take a moment to just soak it all in! – Megan
