It ain’t always that you get to hang out with some pretty (and awesome) fellow bloggers for a makeover! When Yolandi from aZestyLife asked me whether I would like to take part in a hair makeover I was a tad weary of having a big change, but after some consideration I thought that a change would be as good (if not better) than a holiday and I was in! We literally walked in to the salon looking like we did and walked out of the salon looking like completely transformed and fabulous ladies.
David Gillson & team from Carlton Hair Hyde Park made some magic happen and treated us like royalty! We arrived bright and early, welcomed by a friendly Carlton team. Each of us four bloggers had a dedicated stylist who consulted with us to find out what we had on our wish list. They then made suggestions and ultimately the final call.
The Balayage Tint
The tinting was done first – all of the products used on our hair were from Davines South Africa. My wishlist was to have low maintenance hair and to preferably keep the length so Kalpesh Dave (my stylist) suggested a balayage tint as it is a lower maintenance option than highlights whilst still achieving an overall lighter hair color. No touch up highlights required every other month – the perfect option for a busy mom!
Carlton hair in Hyde Park has WIFI if you need to do some Instagram’ing, blogging, texting or more so there was plenty to keep us occupied. We even fell smack bam in the middle of load shedding just after our hair color was applied – BUT saved by the generators!
What is a Balayage Tint?
According to Vogue Australia – Balayage is a French colouring technique that was developed in the 1970s. It’s a freehand technique where the colour is applied by hand rather than using the traditional foiling or cap highlighting techniques. Balayage can be used in even the shortest pixie crop however the best results is in hair below the shoulders.
The technique that Kalpesh used is called the Back-comb technique as it involved teasing the roots of the hair to achieve an even blend. The new lightening system from Davines was used – a system that is very soft on the hair eliminating excessive and unnecessary damage. Afterwards a toner was applied to remove the warmth of the color and achieve a more pearly color. You can use this tinting technique as solid and as bold as your heart desires.
The Carlton Hair Treatments
After the tint it was time for a treatment which involved a cap and micro mist which opens the hair cuticle with steam so that the treatment can penetrate the hair shaft for around 8 minutes. The treatment that I receives was a renewing treatment for anti-aging and dry scalp as I battle with dry scalp often.
The Hair-cut
Kalpesh opted for a layered, modern haircut to suit my curls and body of my hair. Then he worked his magic with the straightening iron for some much needed beach waves after blow waving it first – on trend seen in all magazines and runways. And my new fringe totally adds some softness around my face.
The FOUR of us bloggers that took part in the hair make-overs
Yolandi North from aZestyLife. Her brief to the Carlton team was to keep some of her length so that she would still be able to tie it up but with a dramatic color change.
Bronwyn Abrahams / Queen of Jozi. this lovilee lady is a stunner! She was open to any transformation that included either braiding or blow waving and trying out a new color.
Chanene Ablett from Tonic & Tiaras. This mamma was ready for a new color, cut or even extensions.
Myself, Karen Kelly from Lovilee.co.za. I am all about LOW MAINTENANCE HAIR – definitely wanted to keep the length that I had but maybe go lighter with my color and cut a fringe to soften my face for the upcoming winter.
Kirsten Maarschalk from Kirled Lash was there to make-up. This lady is amazing!!!! Not the first or the last time that I have had her done my make-up, see the previous shoot where she did my hair and make-up a few years ago here. The images were taken by Hanneri de Wet Photography .
