The unicorn trend has taken over the world and we are totally in love with it! It is no surprise as the bright colours of the food and fashion are bound to uplift anyone’s spirits. This unicorn trend does not need to only be seen on Instagram – you can make some of these eye-catching dishes at home. Unicorn toast (or rainbow toast) is a fun and simple way to jazz up a simple dish and is a great health kids breakfast option as well.
How to achieve the unicorn toast colours
The basis of unicorn toast is ‘dying’ the cream cheese to make them look like rainbow colours. Here with some ideas on how you can get the different colours.
- Pink – Mix 1 teaspoon of beetroot powder or freshly squeezed beetroot juice into half a cup of smooth cream cheese.
- Green – Mix 1 teaspoon of Matcha powder into half a cup of cream cheese.
- Yellow – Mix 1/2 teaspoon of turmeric powder into half a cup of cream cheese.
- Blue – Mix 1 teaspoon of blue spirulina powder into half a cup of cream cheese.
These measurements for the ‘dyes’ can be altered to get a darker colour (add more) or a light colour (add less).
How to assemble the unicorn toast
- Toast your bread to your liking – you can use any bread – ciabatta, rye or your standard loaf will work.
- Spread a layer of regular cream cheese on the toast.
- Release your inner Picasso and play with the cream cheese colours.
- Garnish with fresh fruit, seeds, cheese, deli meat or baby vegetables.
This trend is healthy by colouring the cream cheese with natural ingredients – you can get some vitamins and minerals into your kid’s diet with these fun meals.
