Support the Handbag Project with Frasers

Frasers, the leading specialist retailer of quality branded handbags, accessories and luggage, will once again be collaborating with the Handbag Project in August 2014. An initiative founded by Jessica Foord of The Jes Foord Foundation (JFF). Supported by The DNA Project, the program arranges for rape survivors to be given new or used handbags containing basic toiletries.

‘Imagine being from a rural background where you use the same bar of soap to wash your body, clothes and dishes but after being raped you receive this gift handbag, full of toiletries to help make you feel clean and to help you start your journey to recovery?’ – JFF

Frasers’s decision to support the Handbag Project, in honour of Women’s Month, for a second year is a result of the overwhelming support received in 2013. Throughout the Womens’ month of August, Frasers stores will promote the Handbag Project by inviting customers to donate their used handbags. A customer will receive a 15% discount on any Frasers handbag purchase, for each donation made. All collected handbags will be donated to The Handbag Project at the end of the month.

A bit more about the Handbag Project:
Having been a victim of rape herself, Jessica Foord established the Handbag Project to provide comfort to rape survivors during the initial reporting process at police stations. Each survivor is given a handbag containing items such as a facecloth, soap, deodorant spray and new underwear; the aim being to provide a sense of support to the survivor after her ordeal. It can cost the foundation up to R150 per back to fill with the quality necessities for each special rape survivor. The Project currently survives on donations from corporations and individuals, with a team of volunteers collecting, packing and distributing the handbags to police stations.

With Frasers amazing help they have collected many bags, and also need to fill them. To personally donate items or get your company/friends to do a donation drive – find a list of the items needed here.

‘SA stats sitting at every 17 seconds someone is sexually abused or raped in South Africa’ – stats from the JFF. You can make a small donation that can make a big difference!
