We are smack bam in the middle of winter and whilst some of us (well me) just want to stay indoors and under the blankets the van Zyl family ventured out to do a winter family photos session together with a wildebeest! It is one of the prettiest family sessions I have received for feature on the blog, the colours of the shoot, the photo composition and just the personality of each of the family members made these memories worth sharing.
It is the first time that I share something from photographer, Robyn Oosthuysen, from Design Ardour and I hope that there will be plenty more! The session was booked my Sean who had wanted to surprise his wife Jo with a Mother’s Day gift. The session was done on Fort Governor’s Estate, which they are both employed to run, and have the privilege of living on. Their sweet daughter, Rose, is growing up as a little wild child with the most enviable childhood – surrounded by wildlife on the estate as well as in her own back yard including duiker, an ostrich, a wildebeest named Bubbles (who thinks she’s a dog), two gorgeous Australian Collies and a flock on guinea fowl. It all adds up to pure magical – any photographer’s dream to shoot.
Sean and Jo met, as many South Africans do, overseas on a working Visa. Sean is a true blue SA man, while Jo is a super sweet English rose! They dated for a few years before Sean’s Visa was up and he had to come back to South Africa, and of course, Jo couldn’t let him leave without her. Both their interest lay in wildlife preservation and they have worked together at various reserves and have found themselves marked and setting up a home and family on an estate just outside Grahamstown (Also Robyn’s home town).
I was totally surprised to arrive at the Estate to photograph this sweet family only to be met by Bubbles the juvenile wildebeest who thought she was a dog … no really, she ran alongside the vehicle, sniffled in my ear throughout and seriously thinks she’s a dog! It really was one of the coolest family shoots I’ve ever done. Of course the scenery and precious Rose just added to the magnificence of it all. It was truly and unforgettable shoot. Thanks for that!
