Turning nine is such a fun age. Your little girl is no longer quite a little kid, but she isn’t a tween just yet – making a 9th birthday party the perfect excuse for something colourful, creative and a little bit grown-up.
If you’re looking for 9 year old birthday party ideas, why not combine two things kids this age love: friendship bracelets and dancing? – This is exactly what I did. A friendship and disco party is easy to personalise, doesn’t require a huge budget and gives the children something fun to do rather than simply eating cake and playing party games.
The Party Theme: Friendship Meets Disco
Think sparkles, friendship beads, disco balls, music and lots of friendship bracelets. The beauty of this theme is that you can take it in either direction. Keep it soft and pretty with pastel colours, or go all out with bright colours, metallics and plenty of disco-inspired sparkle.
Add a few mini disco balls, balloons and a glittery backdrop and you have a party space that feels special without needing elaborate decorations.
Ask all the friends to play dress up and come dressed in their glitzy best!
Set Up a Friendship Bracelet Station
The friendship bracelet station can be the main activity of the party. Set up a table with bowls or trays filled with colourful beads, alphabet beads, charms and elastic cord. Each child can make bracelets for themselves and their friends.
You could even give everyone a little friendship bracelet kit when they arrive.
Include:
- Stretch cord
- Alphabet beads
- Heart and star charms
- Small scissors
A nice idea is to encourage each child to make one bracelet for themselves and one for a friend. They can then exchange bracelets at the end of the party. This also makes a lovely keepsake from the birthday celebration.
Lovilee Tip
Don’t put every bead on the table at once. Use small bowls or compartment trays to separate the colours and styles. It makes the activity look much prettier and makes it easier for little hands to choose what they want.
Turn It Into a Mini Disco
Once everyone has made their bracelets, it’s time to turn up the music!
You don’t need a professional DJ to create a fun kids’ disco party. A Bluetooth speaker, a good playlist and a few simple disco lights can completely transform your living room, patio or garage.
Create a little dance floor by moving the furniture out of the way.
Disco Party Games for 9-Year-Olds
While nine-year-olds are perfectly happy to dance, having a few activities planned can keep the party moving.
- Freeze Dance
Play music and let everyone dance. When the music stops, everyone has to freeze! Anyone who moves is out, and the last dancer standing wins. - Dance Battle
Split the children into teams and let them choose a song or dance routine. Keep it light-hearted – the idea is to have fun rather than create a serious competition. - Musical Statues
A classic for a reason! Play music while everyone dances and stop it randomly. Everyone has to freeze immediately. - Pass the Disco Ball
Sit the children in a circle and pass a small disco ball around while the music plays. When the music stops, whoever is holding the disco ball gets to choose a small prize or challenge. - Best Dance Move
Give everyone a chance to show off their funniest or best dance move. - Disco Ball Piñata
I used a Chinese lantern, foil backdrop and a glue gun to create a disco ball Piñata. It looked easier than it was, but I am glad that I decided to make this one happen. It was a ‘hit’ at the party!

Keep the Food Easy, But make it Pretty!
Because the children will probably be busy dancing and making bracelets, there is no need for a complicated menu. Think easy-to-eat party food:
- Mini pizzas
- Hot dogs
- Mini Hamburgers – I added some Disco balls on toothpicks to glam them up
- Popcorn
- Fruit skewers – I used some mini disco ball skewers
- Donuts – These were a fun DIY project where we made edible friendship bracelets on top of the donuts
- Birthday cake
Welcome drinks
I glammed up some grape juice and added pink candy floss for the guests and parents to welcome them on arrival…

You Don’t Need a Huge Budget
One of the best things about a friendship and disco birthday party is that you can create a big impact with relatively inexpensive decorations.
A few disco balls, a foil curtain backdrop, a speaker, some colourful beads and a little creativity can go a surprisingly long way.
In fact, some of the most memorable parties are not necessarily the ones with the biggest budgets – they’re the ones where children get to make something, dance together and simply have fun with their friends.
And at nine years old, that’s really what a birthday party should be about.
