Mermaid Wishes & Starfish Kisses | Mermaid Birthday Party Ideas for a 7-Year-Old

Mermaid wishes and starfish kisses… what better way to celebrate turning seven?

For this magical mermaid birthday party, we went all out with shimmering sequins, pretty pastels and plenty of under-the-sea details. The colour palette was a dreamy combination of purple, mint and silver, with starfish, shells and mermaid-inspired touches scattered throughout the party. The result was a fun and whimsical mermaid party for a 7-year-old that was as much about the little DIY details as it was about swimming, playing and celebrating with friends.

And because every good mermaid party needs a little sparkle… Let’s shellebrate!

A Magical Mermaid Party Colour Palette

The party was built around three colours: Purple + Mint + Silver

The combination worked beautifully for a mermaid theme. The mint brought in the feeling of the sea, purple added a magical mermaid feel and silver gave everything that little bit of sparkle.

Sequins were used throughout the party to add texture and shimmer, because if you’re going to have a mermaid birthday party, there is really no such thing as too much sparkle! Starfish, shells and other ocean-inspired details helped tie everything together without making the party feel overly themed.

A Starfish Craft for Each Guest

One of the party activities was a simple DIY starfish craft. Each child received their own starfish to decorate. They could personalise it using sequins, glitter and other pretty embellishments. This was a lovely activity because it doubled as both entertainment and a keepsake.

Rather than sending the children home with another plastic toy, they had something they had actually made themselves.

DIY Party Activity Tip: Choose a craft that doesn’t require too much adult help. At seven, children are old enough to get really creative, but you still want something they can complete within a reasonable amount of time. Pre-preparing the materials into individual little craft kits also makes the activity much easier to manage.

Swimming With the Mermaids

Of course, the best part of this mermaid birthday party was the swimming! The children spent time in the pool, making the party feel like a real underwater adventure. Having a pool party also meant that there was no need to organise a huge number of additional games. Once the children were in the water, they had plenty to keep themselves entertained.

Sea inspired eats

  • Star-Shaped Fruit – Even the fruit got a little mermaid makeover!
Instead of simply serving a bowl of fruit, the fruit was stamped into star shapes. It was such a simple idea, but it transformed an everyday party food into something that felt completely on theme. This is one of my favourite kinds of party detail – easy, inexpensive and effective. I used a small star-shaped cutter on fruit such as watermelon, pineapple or melon. Arrange the pieces on a platter and suddenly you have an adorable under-the-sea party snack.

  • A Sandcastle cake – I absolutely surpirised myself with this cake!!! I found the tutorial on ‘A Beautiful Mess’ – How to make a sandcastle cake and was able to reproduce it relatively easily. The kids however was a bit weary eating a cake that looked like sand, so it became an adult treat!

  • DIY Royal Icing Cookies – I ordered small cookie cutters and a DIY cookie kit from The Artful Biscuit Company. It was easy to follow the recipe inside and with a little creativity I was able to make some really cute sea creatures and shells. Royal icing cookies can look intimidating, but they are actually a lovely DIY party project if you have a little patience.

  • Croissant crabs – These were ordered from The Catering Edge in Randpark Ridge and they did not dissapoint! The kids and adults both loved these delicious treats!

  • Octopus Viennas – soooo easy to make. You literally cut the viennas in half and slice in some ‘tentacles’ after microwaving them and using an edible pen to draw in the eyes they stole the show!

Remember: Using the party colours of purple, mint and silver keeps everything looking cohesive.

The Mermaid Party Table

The party table brought all the little details together. Rather than filling the table with lots of different colours, the purple, mint and silver palette kept everything looking coordinated. An Iridescent foil table cloth added sparkle, while starfish and shell details created the underwater feeling.

DIY Personalised Party Favours

One of the sweetest details was the party favour. If you have a Cricut, personalised pool floats are a great way to add a custom touch to a children’s party. You can create each child’s name in a fun font and apply it to the floatie before the party. It also makes it much easier to keep track of everyone’s floaties when you have a group of children swimming!

Little Details Make the Party – What made this 7th birthday party particularly special was that so many of the details were handmade or personalised. From the decorated starfish craft to the homemade royal icing cookies, star-shaped fruit and Cricut-personalised floaties, the party wasn’t about having the most expensive decorations.

It was about creating a collection of little details that made the birthday girl and her friends feel special. And that’s really what I love about DIY parties. You don’t need to transform your entire house into an underwater kingdom. A few thoughtful details, a cohesive colour palette and activities that the children can enjoy are often more than enough.

Mermaid Wishes and Starfish Kisses

There is something wonderfully magical about a mermaid-themed birthday party. Maybe it’s the sparkle. Maybe it’s the pastel colours. Or maybe it’s simply the idea of being able to spend an afternoon pretending you’re a mermaid swimming through an enchanted ocean.

Whatever the reason, this mermaid party for a 7-year-old was filled with all the things that make a childhood birthday special – friends, swimming, crafts, homemade treats and plenty of sparkle. So if you’re planning a mermaid party of your own…

Make some wishes, find your starfish and let’s shellebrate! 🧜‍♀️⭐
